SUMMARY:Rivers and Bridges: The Way We Move Through and Toward | Gailmarie Pahmeier and Courtney Cliften | Saturday | May 11th 2024
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will encourage participants to write about and consider the “ancient and deeply American quest\, the search for home\,” to quote poet George Bilgere. For example\, how does our culture encourage\, or discourage\, physical relocation and personal reinvention? We’ll use the metaphor of rivers during our discussion\, how water moves us from place to place\, sustains and nurtures and cleanses us\, both literally and metaphorically. The metaphor of bridges also resonates the literal and the metaphoric—how do we cross from one place or identity into another? What are the obstacles such movement presents? And ultimately\, how do we define home? As Norman Maclean famously wrote\, “all things merge into one\, and a river runs through it.”  \n  \nWorkshop coordinators Gailmarie Pahmeier and Courtney Cliften will share their own work in addition to some from poets they admire\, and they’ll offer prompts to help you generate your own poems.  \n  \nBio Notes: Gailmarie Pahmeier is a native of Missouri\, a place whose history is both rich and troubling.  She recalls many visits\, with church groups and Girl Scouts\, to Mark Twain’s hometown of Hannibal\, grew up thinking that Missourians “owned” Mark Twain. Gailmarie is emeritus faculty at UNR and currently teaches in the low-residency MFA Program at UNR/Tahoe. Widely published\, she recently served the state of Nevada as Poet Laureate\, the first to be appointed to that position in 50 years. Courtney Cliften is a Nevada native with a deep and palpable curiosity about what it means to a Nevadan\, a complicated identity for so many. She earned her MFA in Poetry at UNR and now teaches in their English Department. Her work has appeared in The Meadow\, Helen Literary Magazine\, An Anthology of Emerging Poets\, The Hunger\, The Racket\, Caustic Frolic and more.

SUMMARY:The Wind: Live with Fil Corbitt and Michael Branch | Saturday | May 11th 2024
DESCRIPTION:A few years ago\, radiomaker Fil Corbitt found a handsaw in the mountains and built a small desk out in the woods. High in the Sierra Nevada\, flanked by an aspen grove and a lodgepole pine stand\, this is where Fil makes “The Wind”\, a critically acclaimed podcast that investigates our relationship to place through sound. The Wind has aired nationally and internationally on 99% Invisible\, Snap Judgement\, and BBC’s Shortcuts and a short-form version of their work “Postcards from The Wind” airs locally every thursday morning on KUNR. The show has featured interviews with John Luther Adams\, buZ blurr\, Jessica Bruder (Nomadland)\, Gary Farmer\, Dom Flemons\, and Joe Lally (Fugazi)\, among many others. After a tour in 2023\, which included performances in Boise\, Los Angeles\, Vancouver\, Glasgow and a sold-out show in New York City\, Fil will be in Carson City to perform their unique sound-driven performance. Hear more at www.thewind.org \nAn award-winning nature writer and humorist\, Michael Branch is the author of more than 300 essays\, which have appeared in venues including CNN\, the San Francisco Chronicle\, Slate\, Outside\, Pacific Standard\, Huffington Post\, Bustle\, Utne Reader\, Orion\, Ecotone\, National Parks\, The Scientist\, High Country News\, and Terrain.org. Mike’s ten books include his trilogy of place-based humor writing from the Great Basin Desert: Raising Wild\, Rants from the Hill\, and How to Cuss in Western. In the spirit of Mark Twain’s Roughing It\, this session will use storytelling to explore the Great Basin Desert and the humor our engagement with this wild landscape often inspires. After hearing Mike’s stories you’ll likely agree with Huck Finn that “There was things which he stretched\, but mainly he told the truth.”

SUMMARY:Literature in the Digital Age | Scott Neuffer & Dani Putney | Friday | May 10th 2024
DESCRIPTION:Gardnerville journalist and editor Scott Neuffer joins Reno poet Dani Putney to discuss literature in the Digital Age\, from Twainian observations on social media to the advent of online literary magazines and new spaces for underrepresented writers. \nGardnerville journalist and editor Scott Neuffer and Reno poet Dani Putney are Northern Nevada literary pals who have worked together before\, including at the digital magazine trampset that was founded by Neuffer in 2017. The online literary magazine draws global editors\, contributors and readers\, many connected through social media and other platforms. \nNeuffer will discuss literature in the digital age: publishing nonfiction\, fiction and poetry online and the sometimes strange intersection between writing and social media. He’ll cover the internet’s most popular literary form—flash—and help anyone interested in finding online journals to submit to. \nPutney will speak on intersectionality and how the internet has brought together writers and readers from different walks of life. The Digital Age has seen an explosion of online literary magazines. Putney will explore the digital literary landscape and its effects on historically marginalized authors. \nThis event is free to the public.

SUMMARY:Musicale @ The Maizie | Django Walker | Darren Senn | Friday | May 3rd 2024
DESCRIPTION:Once a month the Maizie Theater hosts rising stars in the songwriting world from both near and far. Friday May 3rd features Django Walker with opening act Darren Senn. \nDjango Walker is born and raised in Austin\, TX and the son of Texas Singer-songwriter Jerry Jeff Walker. Django has made a name for himself as a singer-songwriter penning songs for Pat Green ( Texas on my mind\,) Jimmy Buffett (something bout a boat\,) Josh Abbott\, Kevin Fowler and many other Texas artists. He himself has had success as an Artist with his own song “College Life” as well as “Texas Longhorn” which plays in DKR Texas memorial stadium every home game. He is set to go into the studio this fall for his 5th studio album and touring all over the country. \nDarren Senn thrives on engaging his audiences with storytelling and simple\, well-crafted songs. Through his slow and steady songwriting journey the past decade he has taken away the most precious lesson; honesty is the only way. His often melancholy humor is balanced with plenty of keen insight\, ripe with colorful stories and revealing admissions of his shortcomings and how he moves past them with whatever grace he may stumble upon. \nDoors open at 6:30 | Show begins at 7pm | Arrive through the Exhibition Hall | All Ages Welcomed
