SUMMARY:PPI Presents:  The Diviners by Jim Leonard Jr. | Friday | November 8th 2024
DESCRIPTION:When C.C. Showers\, a back-sliding preacher\, leaves the pulpit in Kentucky that he’s inherited from his forefathers and sets out to find an honest living for himself\, he ends up in the tiny town of Zion\, Indiana. He finds a job\, and a place to lay his head\, in the home of widowed mechanic\, Ferris Layman. The locals of Zion welcome Showers with suspicion\, curiosity\, and ultimately joy – the town has been without a preacher for many years\, and the religious townswomen know that Showers has been sent by the Lord to bring the word of God and build the church anew. Showers rebuffs the town’s efforts to set him up in their non-existent pulpit\, and focuses his attentions on the mechanic\, and his son and daughter. Showers begins to think he can do some good as a friend to Buddy\, a wild and innocent young man with a disturbed mind and some uncanny abilities. The death of his mother by drowning\, and his own near-death\, have given Buddy a powerful fear of water\, even as a mysterious aquatic affinity gives him powers as a “water witch”\, with the ability to divine wells and predict the rain. Showers’ makes it his mission to calm Buddy’s fears and reintroduce him to water as a friend. The former preacher tries to keep Buddy’s feet on the ground and heal him with the simple earthly magic of soap and water\, but when the hopes of the townsfolk become involved\, the line between bath and baptism becomes blurred\, and tragedy inevitably strikes. Jim Leonard Jr.’s The Diviners is a luminous story of religion and magic\, faith and doubt\, love and grief. DESCRIPTION:The series “Learning to be Lost” is an introspective journey that embraces the vastness of the desert landscape as a metaphor for navigating uncertainty. Drawing inspiration from desert survival strategies and illusory mirages\, I seek to evoke a visceral experience of being lost.” \nRossitza Todorova is a professional artist and a Professor of Art at Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno\, Nevada. Todorova holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts\, School of Art at Arizona State University\, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Nevada\, Reno. \nAs a child\, Todorova emigrated from Sofia\, Bulgaria\, to the Western United States\, where her passion for the desert was ignited. A multidisciplinary visual artist\, she draws on the influence of the Great Basin and the West’s boom-and-bust built environment. Todorova’s work often uses landscape and geometry\, occupying a space between representation and abstraction as she strives to create visual movement. \nExhibition Dates:  October 3rd thru December 31st 2024 \nArtist Reception:  Friday\, November 8th\, 5 to 7 pm.

Stephen Jon Thompson was just nine years old\, left behind with his four younger siblings\, the youngest just a year old. Their mother had left two days before to go to the laundromat. She never returned. Now the power was out\, the Nilla wafers were running low\, and the Rubik’s cube that his mother had brought home from her waitressing job could not be solved. Stephen\, the oldest\, had a bigger problem to solve\, what to do with the four young souls he was now in charge of. He finally determined they all needed to get out of that motel room. He dialed the front desk. Thus begins Hotel Goodbyes\, Stephen Jon Thompson’s gripping memoir about making it in America against incredible odds. \nHotel Goodbyes is one man’s journey to come to grips with his past. From Ohio to California to Nevada and back\, Stephen takes us on his journey from foster child to wildfire fighter to college graduate to blackjack dealer to state assembly candidate to successful technology executive. Along the way\, he reconnects with his younger siblings and tracks down his Aunt Ouida\, his mother’s sister\, to find the answer to the question he has always had: why did his mother leave that day and never come back? In the end\, Stephen determines that his mother abandoned him\, but also left him with a gift\, a gift of a better life. \nAbandoned by his mother at just nine years old\, Stephen Jon Thompson went on to graduate from the University of San Diego (USD). Since then\, he has been a successful professional in the software and technology industry with companies like Google\, Apple\, LinkedIn\, Amazon\, Nike\, and now Docusign. Active in philanthropic endeavors\, Stephen is a member of the board of directors for Save the Bay\, a nonprofit organization dedicated to cleaning up the San Francisco Bay. Stephen was also a board member of Students Rising Above\, which supports the education of first-generation college students who have overcome unbelievable obstacles like his own. Stephen lives in San Jose\, California\, with his wife\, Penelope\, and two sons\, Carson and Quincy.

The first step is choosing from a variety of reference pictures. They learn to study the picture they have chosen\, determining the size of the drawing\, the shapes involved\, and the placement of one part to another.\n\nThey then go on to paint their drawing. The students will work with three different paint mediums; water color\, acrylic and pastel. They will learn the application process of each medium along with the mixing\, lightening\, and darkening of the colors.\n\nStudents will follow instructions and be given freedom to express their individuality\, which always leads to exciting and interesting results.
