Photography Classes at the Brewery Arts Center

Tired of the same old snapshots? Can't figure out how to use your new camera? Want to build on skill you already have? Photography has come a long way in the past few years, and a class at the Brewery Arts Center will keep you up to date on the latest photographic tools and techniques. There are even classes that teach editing skills so you can make your snapshot into art.

Wildflower Photography

Tired of all the rain, wind, and flooding? Look on the bright side. This will be a record year for wildflowers! Join renowned photographer Richard Massey as he covers the finer points of this colorful topic. Material covered: macro photography, understanding flash, using reflectors, controlling distracting backgrounds and harsh lighting. Techniques learned in this session also apply to photographing insects, crystals, jewelry, and items for eBay. Hear informative and entertaining accounts of how your instructor produced images for International Wildlife, Outdoor Photographer, and the book Wildlife of Saudi Arabia.

Prerequisites: Students should have a basic understanding of how their camera works. This is a hands on class so bring your photo gear. Lectures and demonstrations are in the morning. Shooting and critiques are in the afternoon.

Introduction to Photoshop (Elements)

The Essentials of Photoshop: This class will provide an introduction to Adobe Photoshop Elements. The class will concentrate on photo editing and will cover both global and localized image adjustments, utilizing layers, selections and the tool bar. Class size limited to 6 students

Black & White Workshop

This one day technical workshop will explore different ways to produce digital black & white photographic images and how to achieve the best results in contrast and tonal range. Class size is limited to 6 students.

Matting 101

This workshop will be a hands-on learning experience on the use of a matt cutter and determining matt sizes and window cuts. Class size is limited to 5 students.

Introduction to B & W Darkroom Printing

This first class the student will be familiarized with the darkroom. They will be shown how to set up the chemical trays, the parts of the enlarger, how to load film, how to print a contact print, determine exposure time and to print a final photo. Time allotting we will cover basics of dodging and burning. Email instructor with questions.

Introduction to B & W Film

This is a one on one instruction class. In this class we will first assess your photographic knowledge and then plan the class course from there. In this class you will learn how to choose, load and take photographs with a 35mm film camera. If you have no prior photography education we will lightly cover photography basics. You will learn to process your film using chemicals provided in the darkroom, how to load film unto developing reels, preparing chemicals and developing, washing and drying your film. This class will also consist of photo outings. Those students under 18 years old will need to be accompanied by a parent. This class is tailored to the individual student.

Darkroom Open Studio

Supervised use of the BAC Darkroom. Must have experience developing film and photos in a darkroom setting. Must be proficient in using darkroom equipment. Instructor on site for assistance.

Tuition: $50 a month plus a $12 fee for chemical use

Large & Medium Format B & W Film

This is a one-on-one class that is tailored to meet your experience and interests. Tell us what you want to learn and we will shape the class to meet your needs. Included will be two photo outings where you can use one of our 4x5 or medium format cameras…or use your own. Photo sessions will be to areas your instructor recently covered on magazine assignments. Topics covered: choosing the right film for the job, loading film (roll film cameras, 4x5 film holders, or roll film backs), mixing chemicals that best match your film, film developing, setting up the darkroom for printing, making test prints and the final 8x10 prints, and how to organize and store your negatives. For the lab sessions we provide the chemistry and paper. You purchase the film and develop it using our professional quality CPE-2 Jobo Rotary Processor. If you need a refresher on some of the photography basics, we will take the time to bring you up to speed.
